With each Newsletter we’ll be introducing you to the Honda Marine Dealer Network, letting you know where your nearest Honda Marine dealer is situated and also giving you background into how Honda Marine has been able to so effectively establish itself in the South African market.

Working our way around the coast and then inland, we’re now heading off to Honda Marine Knysna.
Here we find ourselves in discussion with Dave Hoets, the Dealer Principal.

Why did you choose Honda in terms of wanting to be a Marine dealer?
It’s probably all my father’s fault because when I was 12 years old he bought me a Honda DAX (ST70) motorbike. We had great fun on this machine and after this I was hooked on Honda. In fact during my early years and being very engineering-orientated, there were two people whom I looked up to as heroes, one was Ferdinand Porsche, the other was Soichiro Honda. Both men did things their own way and at any given time you would find them taking existing engineering boundaries to new levels with exceptional innovation. I particularly liked Soichiro Honda’s policy on perfection and engine tolerances.

Fortunately Honda’s timing to move into SA came at exactly the same time that I’d sold my old business, so it was a no brainer to go and talk to them. I opened up a Honda Power Products shop in Knysna, knowing from the outset that this would be the stepping stone to pursuing my passion of being on the water, and ultimately of setting up a Honda Marine dealership.
How long have you been a Honda Marine dealer?
For five years.

Meet the Team at the Dealership
As the shop has grown, so has the headcount, and as Dave says,“it’s important to have dynamic people in key positions who are passionate, professional and knowledgeable in what they do”. Job titles are felt to be a little over-rated, so at the Knysna shop it works something like this:

BOAT SALES: Rhoodie Barnard now heads this up, with Dave and Derik Meintjes also very much involved.

SERVICE: Newly appointed Craig Caldwell runs the Workshop, ably supported by Fred, Dominique, Sakkie and Lewis.

PARTS & ACCESSORIES: With the setting up and recent launch of the Marine Lifestyle
& Accessories Centre, Dave is very involved here with Kim Muller looking after this aspect of the business on a daily basis.

SKIPPER COURSES/ CERTIFICATES of FITNESS: When not selling boats, Derik Meintjes runs these important areas, allowing the dealership to run as a ‘one-stop shop’ for all your boating needs.

ACCOUNTS: Carien Volschenk is the Accounts Department.

FRONT DESK: Newly appointed Odette Perry looks after the Front Desk, helps to run the overall office and will invariably be the first voice you hear when you phone the shop.

CLEANER: Then there’s Blendina keeping the shop and all the boats clean and tidy at all times, slipping the team some tea and coffee in between.

With what Boat Manufacturers do you have direct tie-ups?
We enjoy a strong personal relationship with Don Jarratt of Austral Marine in Durban who with his comprehensive range of Panache, Benguela and Odyssey boats has become our main supplier. On the inflatable boat side, we have strong ties with Infanta Inflatables in Swellendam who are only a couple of hours down the road from us and as a result can react quickly to our customers’ requirements. When it comes to bigger boats we have the World Cat agency for the Western Cape, as well as the Lee Cat agency for the Garden Route, so all in all we enjoy excellent relationships with a diverse group of boat manufacturers.

What types of Boat Packages are most popular in your area?

Benguela 530 CAT powered by 2 x Honda BF60HP

In Knysna we are fortunate to have the offshore waters of the Indian Ocean lurking just outside the infamous Knysna Heads, as well as having the calmer inshore tidal waters of the Knysna Estuary/Lagoon. As a result the demand through our Knysna shop covers a broad spectrum of boating options, from bigger Honda twin mount offshore boats such as the Benguela 530 CAT to the Benguela 19 Centre-Console and 5 to 7.6metre RIBs, whereas for inshore waters you’d be looking at smaller Honwave inflatables powered by Honda tiller arm outboards, up to bigger single mount RIBs, as well as the complete range of Panache speed boats starting at 14.5ft right up to 24.5ft.

The options are numerous, so the most important thing is to carefully identify the customer’s application needs and to come up with a boating solution that will best work for him or her.

In what main areas does your Workshop specialize?
We service only Honda outboards, and are able to offer a complete new boat rigging facility in which we take great pride. We can also anti-foul any type of boat, as well as offer both general and more specifically, fibre-glass repairs as and when required.

Servicing of Honda outboards and rigging is what we do best/ PHOTO: Paul Weavers

For all our customers we also put on a Boat Launch and Retrieve (and a full clean and engine flush) service which is charged out at very reasonable rates. We endeavor to assist our customers wherever we can, to ensure that they enjoy hassle-free boating.

With which Leisure Accessory companies are you involved?

The new Marine Lifestyle & Accessories Centre/ PHOTO: Paul Weavers

With our new Marine Lifestyle & Accessories Centre now up and running, we believe that we can offer our customers one of the best accessories shops in the whole of South Africa. Whatever your boating need, there’s a pretty good chance that we’ll have it in stock.

PHOTO: Paul Weavers

Specializing in more upmarket watersports equipment, from skis to wakeboards to wetsuits, we also offer a range of life jackets, kayak vests, fenders, anchors, shackles, all types of ropes and of course an array of polarized sunglasses to keep out that glare when you’re 5 miles out to sea bringing in that big one!

A full range of Honda Power Products is also available/ PHOTO: Paul Weavers

On top of our marine activities, we’re also an authorized Honda Power Products dealer offering a full range of Honda Generators, Water Pumps, Lawnmowers, Brushcutters and Engines. Honda Power Products represent the most in demand, best known and highest selling power equipment throughout the World, and with them now being an integral part of our all-new Lifestyle Centre, it adds huge value to what we are already able to offer.

With which Navigational Equipment companies are you involved?
We currently have close ties with both Garmin and Lowrance where their GPS/Fishfinder combos are by far and away the most popular units for our waters. We also sell many of our lagoon-based boats with smaller Fishfinder/Depth Guage units due to the tidal conditions which are ever present.
With Knysna having a strong yachting community, we’ve also equipped several yachts with full-on NMEA compliant systems where all the electronic gauges, transducers and other equipment are all interlinked.

Do you sell Canoes/ Kayaks – if you do then what makes/ types are available?
Our main line of kayaks is fully imported from Wilderness Systems in North Carolina, USA, where innovative designs tuned for performance, premium outfitting, and stunning quality have made these boats among the most acclaimed paddling experiences in the world. From new entrants to seasoned experts, Wilderness Systems kayaks are designed to get you where you want to be, more often –and that’s on the water.
We’ve also just launched a range of SUP’s or Stand-Up-Paddle boards which have become quite the rage down here, particularly for those wanting to take a leisurely paddle in and around nearby Buffalo Bay. We also offer some Perception kayaks together with a range of smaller fibre-glass Whisper boats (made in Cape Town), as well as the full range of Honwave inflatable boats (made by Honda). One way or another, we will find a way to get you on the water!

Do you have a specific message for the readers?
Above all we must remember that we are delivering ‘Pleasure’ to our clients from the moment they walk into the shop, and for as long as they own that Honda powered product, and normally that’s a lifelong experience. We need to understand that it’s ‘Happy Money’ that they’re spending on their families and themselves, so we must try and make the whole experience a happy one from getting them into the right boat for their individual application, to getting the boat to perform at its absolute best and ultimately in delivering a high quality overall boating package. We are dealing with the best boat builders in South Africa, and we’ve chosen these partners carefully. We’re also selling the premier Brand 4 stroke so we are constantly trying to put packages together to match.

Overall we find that the majority of our customers become our friends, a part of the Honda Marine Knysna family, and this is without doubt the most satisfying and pleasurable part of our business.

Honda Civic Natural Gas named 2012 Green Car of the Year
17/11/2011 – LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The all-new 2012 Honda Civic Natural Gas – the only factory-built, compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered car produced in America – was named 2012 Green Car of the Year® at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The award was presented to Honda by the editors of Green Car Journal representing a diverse panel of environmental experts and automotive enthusiasts who annually select a single vehicle for its outstanding environmental performance.
“The Civic Natural Gas is not only a great vehicle, it also demonstrates Honda’s commitment to provide a variety of alternatives to gasoline,” said Michael Accavitti, vice president of marketing at American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “The Civic Natural Gas and the all-new Fit EV that we introduced at the Los Angeles Auto Show are the latest additions to a rapidly expanding family of alternative energy Honda vehicles aimed at cutting petroleum use and reducing our carbon footprint.”

To support growing consumer interest in alternative-fuel vehicles, Honda is expanding its retail network of Civic Natural Gas retail outlets to 200 dealers in 36 states. Previously, retail sales of the natural gas-powered Civic had been limited to four states – California, New York, Utah and Oklahoma. The 2012 Civic Natural Gas went on sale on October 18 with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price1 (MSRP) starting at $26,155.

With multiple benefits including lower fuel costs and extremely low smog-forming emissions, the 2012 Civic Natural Gas currently qualifies for a state-issued decal allowing single-occupant access to High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) “carpool” lanes in California and several other states.

The Civic Natural Gas engine produces almost zero smog-forming emissions and is the cleanest internal-combustion vehicle certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Featuring new styling, enhanced feature content and increased fuel economy, the redesigned 2012 Civic Natural Gas can now be equipped with the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System featuring an exclusive database of publicly accessible CNG refueling stations across the United States.

All Civic Natural Gas models are produced by Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, LLC (HMIN) using domestic and globally sourced parts.  HMIN is the recipient of a 2011 Platinum Award for quality from J.D. Power and Associates.  In addition to being named 2012 Green Car of the Year, previous versions of the CNG-powered Civic have topped the “greenest vehicle” rankings of the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE) for eight straight years.

Honda Aircraft Company to Build New HondaJet Aircraft Maintenance Facility in Greensboro, North Carolina
LAS VEGAS, NV, U.S.A., October 10, 2011 – Honda Aircraft Company, along with senior officials from the State of North Carolina and the Greensboro Economic Development Alliance, recently announced Honda’s selection of Greensboro, North Carolina, as the location for its new HondaJet Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility. The company will invest an additional $20 million to build the new MRO facility, bringing its total capital investment for construction of its North Carolina facilities to more than $120 million.

Honda Aircraft made the announcement at the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) Convention, the world’s largest business aviation annual event, held this year in Las Vegas, while North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue and Triad area officials made a simultaneous announcement in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Honda Aircraft’s MRO facility will provide services for HondaJet owners that complement the services they receive at facilities across its HondaJet dealer network in North America and Europe. These services include heavy maintenance services, such as extensive repair or overhaul work best provided by the aircraft OEM. This MRO plan demonstrates Honda Aircraft’s focus on providing an unsurpassed ownership service experience for HondaJet customers from the very first customer delivery.

“We intend to offer HondaJet customers an overall ownership experience that is second to none in business aviation and one that is commensurate with all the best attributes of Honda,” said Michimasa Fujino, President and CEO of Honda Aircraft Company.

The selection of North Carolina also underscores Honda’s continued, significant investment in the HondaJet program, and its commitment to the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina.

“After a rigorous evaluation of various site alternatives, we concluded that we could best serve our customers and complement HondaJet dealer service facilities by placing our MRO facility here in North Carolina, where we are delighted to begin writing this next chapter of our growth,” said Fujino. “This will also reinforce Honda’s contribution and support to continue developing the aviation and aerospace cluster in the Piedmont Triad Region.”

Honda Aircraft will expand its already substantial presence at the Greensboro Piedmont Triad Airport (PTI) with this new MRO facility. The MRO facility will be an expansion of the company’s World Headquarters campus, where its state-of-the-art R&D, Manufacturing and Headquarter buildings today encompass more than 500,000 square feet of space on approximately 80 acres.

“Honda’s decision to expand their Greensboro facility validates the strength and vitality of our aviation cluster, and their plan to invest an additional $80 million and create 419 more high-paying jobs demonstrates Honda’s commitment to our community and to the entire State of North Carolina,” said Dan Lynch, President of the Greensboro Economic Development Alliance. “We have 180 aerospace companies in the state employing more than 9,500 workers, but Honda Aircraft Company is the crown jewel.”

“My top priority is creating jobs and it’s clear that we’ve got momentum when global companies like Honda Aircraft Company decide to expand operations in North Carolina,” said Gov. Perdue. “North Carolina is attractive to companies because of our skilled workforce and excellent business climate. This will enhance our aerospace cluster in the Triad.”

“No matter where I go in North Carolina, the issue everyone talks to me about is jobs,” commented U.S. Senator Kay Hagan. “That is why today’s announcement is so important for North Carolina and for Greensboro. I am thrilled that Honda Aircraft will be bringing an additional 400-plus high-paying jobs to Greensboro.”

Honda Aircraft has leased 54 additional acres at PTI Airport. The new MRO facility will make use of 20 of these acres. With current and future expansion, Honda Aircraft is leasing more than 130 acres at PTI Airport.

Design of the MRO facility, which is expected to encompass more than 80,000 square feet, will be finalized in the first quarter of 2012, with construction scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2012, and occupancy to begin in the first half of 2013. This timing supports the HondaJet’s scheduled certification and entry into service in mid-2013.

Honda Marine Port Alfred’s ‘Stin Ki Pu’ cleaning up the Kowie River

'Stin-Ki-Pu' in action

Honda Marine Port Alfred has joined the fight against pollution on their local waterways with their new addition – ‘Stin Ki Pu’. After hearing many complaints from Port Alfred residents about the litter, plastic bags, bottles and other undesirables floating in the Kowie River, Honda Marine Port Alfred decided to do something about it.

So they bought and refurbished the little boat, ‘Stin ki pu’, which is all of 3.1m long. It was originally manufactured in Port Alfred as a sailing dingy, but now it has a very much more important purpose in life. From now on, a Honda Marine Port Alfred staff member will skipper ‘Stin Ki Pu’ in the town’s waterways, gathering up all any polluting items that they encounter.

The outboard motor powering this craft is a 5hp Honda four-stroke. Honda is best suited to this work as it produces only four-stroke engines, which means there are far less emissions compared with conventional two-stroke motors. Four-strokes do not burn oil and spew it out of the exhaust, as a two-stroke does. Rather, the oil is used for lubricating the engine, as with a car. Critically therefore, ‘Stin Ki Pu’ will not be polluting the very canals and the river that it is supposed to be cleaning up.
Two-stroke outboards have been banned in most locations in the US, Europe, England and Australia, and in a number of waterways in Southern Africa, for this very reason. Also, the Honda 5hp is quiet-running, so the boat will not disturb anyone on the river, while the people on board carry out their cleaning operations. Hondas are also up to 60 percent more fuel-efficient than two-strokes, making this a very cost-effective exercise.

While a Honda Marine Port Alfred staff member will always be on hand to man the boat, the company says the position is also open to people who would like to gain hours on the water for their skippers’ ticket or anyone else who would like to volunteer their time.

All donations – whether it be for equipment or other – towards sustaining this effort, or as already mentioned if you would like to volunteer your time for cleaning up the Kowie, will be welcomed.

Businesses are also invited to contribute towards the clean up effort in exchange for having their logos put on the side of ‘Stin Ki Pu’.

For more information interested parties should contact Honda Marine Port Alfred on Tel.: 046 624 1189.

Honda Marine Knysna’s first Lee Cat Xpressa 800 finds new home

Lee Cat Xpressa 800 PHOTO: Paul Weavers

Following her first sea trial/combined boat test with a potential new owner, the impressive Lee Cat Xpressa 800 certainly didn’t disappoint. Powered by 2 x Honda BF150HP outboards and with Lee brothers, Leon and Kevin on board together with Knysna personnel, the Xpressa 800 was put through her paces in no uncertain terms.

Covered forward console area with controls and full instrumentation/ PHOTO: Paul Weavers

Once having navigated the Knysna Heads in what were choppy conditions, the Xpressa 800 completed a number of turns, both long and tight, as well as some standing starts to see how quickly she would get on the plane in the rough water. With minimal effort the Xpressa 800 with her 300 Honda horses adapted extremely well to everything that both the skippers and the sea could throw at her.

The Xpressa 800 handled the infamous Knysna Heads with ease/ PHOTO: Paul Weavers

Coming back through the Knysna Heads on a racy following sea was very comfortable and once back in the lagoon, the ability of the Xpressa 800 to get effortlessly on the plane with one of the engines completely trimmed up was quite an eye-opener for some, but not really unexpected to others.

Suffice to say that this Honda-powered Lee Cat impressed all aboard and it wasn’t long before she moved to the Knysna Quays and her new home.

Honda Marine Durban eventually finish 3rd at Inanda Dam Raft Race

TEAM Honda Marine Durban shortly before doing their 'HAKA'

Following the burning of some midnight oil, and some frantic activity before the start, Honda Marine Durban battled the elements to finish the Raft race held at the Inanda Dam in Hillcrest, Durban in a highly respectable 3rd Place.

No task is too big for the staff at Honda Marine Durban, therefore the call from Team Captain and Dealer Principal, Craig Wilson, to put together a suitable craft for the Inanda Dam Race, was quickly answered with some hurried after-work design and production tweaks, culminating in some last minute fine-tuning on race day morning.

Not bad for a Raft they thought....and hoped!

All went well, but the choppy dam waters took their toll, forcing Team Honda Marine Durban to eject one of their almost-volunteering crew members from the raft, so that he could more ably steer the makeshift vessel by grabbing hold of the bow and implement a series of Olympic-like swimming kick manoeuvres to prevent her from floating even further backwards?

The 'almost-volunteer' before being rescued

Unfortunately said crew member had overstated his pre-event training programme regime and fitness levels and after 5 kicks had to be pulled back on board for some emergency First Aid treatment. Despite a shortage of volunteers to administer said treatment, we are happy to report that back on land the ‘Castle’ tent was able to stabilize him very quickly and to this day he remains in their capable hands.

Even greater things planned for next year

So 3rd it was to be, no mean feat, and most importantly some much-needed funds were raised for the local Forest Hill Sports Club, primarily through Craig having tied up a potentially bank-breaking sponsorship amount from the local Waterfall SPAR just days prior to the event.

Big plans are already afoot for next year’s event in Honda Marine Durban’s Team quest to achieve overall honours and rumours that Craig is currently talking to a number of Formula One team designers are purely speculative…

Honda Marine Harare launched at the 50th Anniversary of the Kariba Invitational Tiger Fishing Tournament (KITFT)

Honda Marine Harare announcing themselves at Kariba

At the end of October, the National Angling Union (NAU) hosted the 50th Anniversary of the KITFT at Charara in Kariba, Zimbabwe. The tournament was a great success with up to 500 boats at the startline, and provided the perfect setting for Honda Marine Harare (Ruwa Branch) to officially launch their Honda Marine affiliation via a prominent stand and jetty very close to the weigh bay which gave maximum exposure for the “Powered by Honda” boats.
What an incredible sight it was to see people from all over supporting this event with such enthusiasm. There were also many commercial stands on hand at the NAU Charara site all linked to boating and fishing. Indeed the “Powered by Honda” boats were used to transport the film crews and some of the marshals for the whole event which resulted in some fantastic feedback on both the boats and the Honda outboards for the Honda Marine Harare team.

There was also great interest shown in the Honda outboards which were on display at the Honda Marine Harare Stand. Even before this event many people had phoned and e-mailed regarding future orders, and now that everyone knows that Honda has a proper base in Zimbabwe, the interest will for sure now turn into firm orders.
For those fishermen who persevered through the heat all day until weigh-in, there were some great prizes on offer, probably the most unusual was for the team that came in 50Th at this 50th Anniversary Tournament being a Honwave inflatable boat with a Honda BF2.3HP outboard – not too shabby! All in all the day was a resounding success and we wish Honda Marine Harare every success for the future.

Honda Marine empowering Marine Protected Area Champions

This young lady conservationist went from 2HP to 230HP in a couple of hours!/ Photo: Paul Weavers

At the recent Marine Protected Area Forum sponsored by WWF and DEA which was held in Still Bay from 6-9 November 2011, delegates were treated to an afternoon of fun and excitement as many took to the water in a Honda powered boat for the first time. With some smaller Honwave inflatable boats powered by Honda 2, 5 and 10HP outboards on hand, together with a Falcon 7.6m RIB powered by 2 x Honda BF115’s, there was an array of craft available for test.

The Falcon 7.6m powered by 2 x Honda BF115HP outboards proved very popular/ Photo: Paul Weavers

Of particular interest was one lady conservationist who had just completed her 5 mile Skipper Course theory and wanted to get some practical time in on the water. Starting off with the Honda 2HP following some basic instruction, she quickly got to grips with things, and found herself comfortably controlling 230HP by the end of the day, showing the extreme user-friendliness of the Honda 4-stroke outboards.

Certainly trips and for a special few, the opportunity to drive the newly rigged Falcon 7.6m RIB powered by 2 x Honda BF115’s was the highlight of the afternoon. Initially many were intimidated by the sheer size and power of this beautiful craft where Honda’s BLAST (Boosted Low Speed Torque) system was very evident in shooting the boat onto the plane in record time, but these fears were quickly allayed following some personal one on one instruction from Falcon Inflatables’ Pieter Heyneman.

All in all a great afternoon was had by all, as these very passionate and highly motivated Marine Environmental Champions now return to their respective Marine Protected Areas, to continue, in direct conjunction with the WWF Honda Marine Parks Programme, their all important conservation work.

Honda Marine secures joint tender with Falcon to supply Ambulance RIB’s to the Middle East
Perhaps one of the most radical designs to yet come out of the Falcon Inflatables’ factory in Swellendam is this 7.6m Ambulance RIB. In partnership with Honda Marine SA, Falcon has secured a joint tender to supply a number of these custom-built Ambulance RIB’s powered by twin mount Honda BF115’s for export to the Middle East.

A standard 7.6m Falcon RIB/ Photo: Paul Weavers

Taking a standard 7.6m Falcon RIB and coverting it into a custom-built high-speed Emergency Room/ Intensive Care Unit was no easy task. Much research was undertaken by Pieter Heyneman and the Falcon team to ensure that this Ambulance RIB would be able to offer the latest state-of-the-art medical care, and that it would be able to get to its pick-up and drop-off destinations both quickly and safely.

Rivers in the Middle East are a great source of access to remote areas/ Photo: Jim Gordon USA

In desolate regions where the roads are either non-existent or barely driveable, river access is often the only route open for emergency rescues. What’s more in many cases, the distances to the nearest hospital are vast, so it’s essential that the Ambulance RIB is fully equipped to ensure that patients can be properly stabilized, or if necessary receive emergency treatment during the transportation period.

The Cockpit is fully integrated into the ER

The fast floating ER

With all this criteria in mind, you need a boat that’s been built to the latest RIB design specifications and a power supply that will offer you performance, reliability and superior fuel economy, therefore for all parties the choice of the Falcon/ Honda boat package combination was an easy one.
