Honda Marine Randburg

Yoshiaki Nakamura, President Honda Motor Southern Africa and Garth Smitherim, Honda Marine Randburg owner, at the launch

With each Newsletter we’ll be introducing you to the Honda Marine Dealer Network, letting you know where your nearest Honda Marine dealer is situated and also giving you background into how Honda Marine has been able to so effectively establish itself in the South African market.

Working our way inland, we’re now heading off to Honda Marine Randburg, where we find ourselves in discussion with Garth Smitherim, the Dealer Principal at Honda Marine Randburg.

Why did you choose Honda in terms of wanting to be a Marine dealer?
When I left Waterworld to go on my own, I knew that I had to align myself with a marine brand that takes the SA marine market seriously. I have had my eye on Honda Marine for quite a while now, and they are most certainly the most passionate brand out there. Although off a small base, they have been the fastest growing outboard brand for two years now, so
I think that says something if you consider we are at the tail end of a recession, and the marine market was probably worst hit. When I first met with Clinton Lambert, the Honda Marine brand manager, to discuss the opportunity of opening a Honda dealership in Randburg, I knew that I was NOT working with a Mickey Mouse organization. Honda Motor SA is an automotive giant, with a personal touch that inspires their marine dealer network. It’s great being on a winning team.

Honda Marine Randburg Showroom

My area of expertise lies in the recreational bowrider segment of the Gauteng market, and my customer base has developed around that. We sell outboard powered bowriders from 14,5′ up to 24,5′, we sell nearly new inboard powered sportboats, towboats, deckboats and pontoon boats.
We even sell offshore boats, when a customer is searching for one.

Why did you choose Honda in terms of wanting to be a Marine dealer?
Looking at all our options and based on the fact that St Francis is a boating mecca with both tremendous commercial and leisure opportunities, we wanted to partner with a strong brand which has fantastic prospects going forward, therefore the choice of Honda, the fastest growing 4-stroke brand in South Africa, was always going to be at the top of our list.
How long have you been a Honda Marine dealer?
We’ve only been up and running for 6 months, so we’re still very much in the first phase of our Honda business operations, but the reception from the people of St Francis has been phenomenal and we envisage things going from strength to strength.

DEALER FOCUS

HONDA MARINE KNYSNA
With each Newsletter we’ll be introducing you to the Honda Marine Dealer Network, letting you know where your nearest Honda Marine dealer is situated and also giving you background into how Honda Marine has been able to so effectively establish itself in the South African market.

Working our way around the coast and then inland, we’re now heading off to Honda Marine Knysna.
Here we find ourselves in discussion with Dave Hoets, the Dealer Principal.

Why did you choose Honda in terms of wanting to be a Marine dealer?
It’s probably all my father’s fault because when I was 12 years old he bought me a Honda DAX (ST70) motorbike. We had great fun on this machine and after this I was hooked on Honda. In fact during my early years and being very engineering-orientated, there were two people whom I looked up to as heroes, one was Ferdinand Porsche, the other was Soichiro Honda. Both men did things their own way and at any given time you would find them taking existing engineering boundaries to new levels with exceptional innovation. I particularly liked Soichiro Honda’s policy on perfection and engine tolerances.

Fortunately Honda’s timing to move into SA came at exactly the same time that I’d sold my old business, so it was a no brainer to go and talk to them. I opened up a Honda Power Products shop in Knysna, knowing from the outset that this would be the stepping stone to pursuing my passion of being on the water, and ultimately of setting up a Honda Marine dealership.
How long have you been a Honda Marine dealer?
For five years.

Meet the Team at the Dealership
As the shop has grown, so has the headcount, and as Dave says,“it’s important to have dynamic people in key positions who are passionate, professional and knowledgeable in what they do”. Job titles are felt to be a little over-rated, so at the Knysna shop it works something like this:

BOAT SALES: Rhoodie Barnard now heads this up, with Dave and Derik Meintjes also very much involved.

SERVICE: Newly appointed Craig Caldwell runs the Workshop, ably supported by Fred, Dominique, Sakkie and Lewis.

PARTS & ACCESSORIES: With the setting up and recent launch of the Marine Lifestyle
& Accessories Centre, Dave is very involved here with Kim Muller looking after this aspect of the business on a daily basis.

SKIPPER COURSES/ CERTIFICATES of FITNESS: When not selling boats, Derik Meintjes runs these important areas, allowing the dealership to run as a ‘one-stop shop’ for all your boating needs.

ACCOUNTS: Carien Volschenk is the Accounts Department.

FRONT DESK: Newly appointed Odette Perry looks after the Front Desk, helps to run the overall office and will invariably be the first voice you hear when you phone the shop.

CLEANER: Then there’s Blendina keeping the shop and all the boats clean and tidy at all times, slipping the team some tea and coffee in between.

With what Boat Manufacturers do you have direct tie-ups?
We enjoy a strong personal relationship with Don Jarratt of Austral Marine in Durban who with his comprehensive range of Panache, Benguela and Odyssey boats has become our main supplier. On the inflatable boat side, we have strong ties with Infanta Inflatables in Swellendam who are only a couple of hours down the road from us and as a result can react quickly to our customers’ requirements. When it comes to bigger boats we have the World Cat agency for the Western Cape, as well as the Lee Cat agency for the Garden Route, so all in all we enjoy excellent relationships with a diverse group of boat manufacturers.

What types of Boat Packages are most popular in your area?

Benguela 530 CAT powered by 2 x Honda BF60HP

In Knysna we are fortunate to have the offshore waters of the Indian Ocean lurking just outside the infamous Knysna Heads, as well as having the calmer inshore tidal waters of the Knysna Estuary/Lagoon. As a result the demand through our Knysna shop covers a broad spectrum of boating options, from bigger Honda twin mount offshore boats such as the Benguela 530 CAT to the Benguela 19 Centre-Console and 5 to 7.6metre RIBs, whereas for inshore waters you’d be looking at smaller Honwave inflatables powered by Honda tiller arm outboards, up to bigger single mount RIBs, as well as the complete range of Panache speed boats starting at 14.5ft right up to 24.5ft.

Panache 1950 powered by a Honda BF150HP/ PHOTO: LEISURE BOATING

The options are numerous, so the most important thing is to carefully identify the customer’s application needs and to come up with a boating solution that will best work for him or her.

In what main areas does your Workshop specialize?
We service only Honda outboards, and are able to offer a complete new boat rigging facility in which we take great pride. We can also anti-foul any type of boat, as well as offer both general and more specifically, fibre-glass repairs as and when required.

Servicing of Honda outboards and rigging is what we do best/ PHOTO: Paul Weavers

For all our customers we also put on a Boat Launch and Retrieve (and a full clean and engine flush) service which is charged out at very reasonable rates. We endeavor to assist our customers wherever we can, to ensure that they enjoy hassle-free boating.

With which Leisure Accessory companies are you involved?

The new Marine Lifestyle & Accessories Centre/ PHOTO: Paul Weavers

With our new Marine Lifestyle & Accessories Centre now up and running, we believe that we can offer our customers one of the best accessories shops in the whole of South Africa. Whatever your boating need, there’s a pretty good chance that we’ll have it in stock.

PHOTO: Paul Weavers

Specializing in more upmarket watersports equipment, from skis to wakeboards to wetsuits, we also offer a range of life jackets, kayak vests, fenders, anchors, shackles, all types of ropes and of course an array of polarized sunglasses to keep out that glare when you’re 5 miles out to sea bringing in that big one!

A full range of Honda Power Products is also available/ PHOTO: Paul Weavers

On top of our marine activities, we’re also an authorized Honda Power Products dealer offering a full range of Honda Generators, Water Pumps, Lawnmowers, Brushcutters and Engines. Honda Power Products represent the most in demand, best known and highest selling power equipment throughout the World, and with them now being an integral part of our all-new Lifestyle Centre, it adds huge value to what we are already able to offer.

With which Navigational Equipment companies are you involved?
We currently have close ties with both Garmin and Lowrance where their GPS/Fishfinder combos are by far and away the most popular units for our waters. We also sell many of our lagoon-based boats with smaller Fishfinder/Depth Guage units due to the tidal conditions which are ever present.
With Knysna having a strong yachting community, we’ve also equipped several yachts with full-on NMEA compliant systems where all the electronic gauges, transducers and other equipment are all interlinked.

Do you sell Canoes/ Kayaks – if you do then what makes/ types are available?
Our main line of kayaks is fully imported from Wilderness Systems in North Carolina, USA, where innovative designs tuned for performance, premium outfitting, and stunning quality have made these boats among the most acclaimed paddling experiences in the world. From new entrants to seasoned experts, Wilderness Systems kayaks are designed to get you where you want to be, more often –and that’s on the water.
We’ve also just launched a range of SUP’s or Stand-Up-Paddle boards which have become quite the rage down here, particularly for those wanting to take a leisurely paddle in and around nearby Buffalo Bay. We also offer some Perception kayaks together with a range of smaller fibre-glass Whisper boats (made in Cape Town), as well as the full range of Honwave inflatable boats (made by Honda). One way or another, we will find a way to get you on the water!

Do you have a specific message for the readers?
Above all we must remember that we are delivering ‘Pleasure’ to our clients from the moment they walk into the shop, and for as long as they own that Honda powered product, and normally that’s a lifelong experience. We need to understand that it’s ‘Happy Money’ that they’re spending on their families and themselves, so we must try and make the whole experience a happy one from getting them into the right boat for their individual application, to getting the boat to perform at its absolute best and ultimately in delivering a high quality overall boating package. We are dealing with the best boat builders in South Africa, and we’ve chosen these partners carefully. We’re also selling the premier Brand 4 stroke so we are constantly trying to put packages together to match.

Overall we find that the majority of our customers become our friends, a part of the Honda Marine Knysna family, and this is without doubt the most satisfying and pleasurable part of our business.

DEALER FOCUS – Honda Marine Port Alfred
With each Newsletter we’ll be introducing you to the Honda Marine Dealer Network, letting you know where your nearest Honda Marine dealer is situated and also giving you background into how Honda Marine has been able to so effectively establish itself in the South African market.

Working our way around the coast and then inland, we’re now heading off to Honda Marine Port Alfred.
Here we find ourselves in discussion with Doug Kemsley, the Dealer Principal.

Why did you choose Honda in terms of wanting to be a Marine dealer?
Our main facility is exceptionally strategically located right on the water in the Royal Alfred Marina’s Small Boat Harbour and right next to the busy N2 highway between Port Elizabeth and East London, so we had the pick of all the outboard motor brands to choose from when we opened. They all approached us to deal in their products. However, having been in the motoring game for more than 40 years, I was well aware that of all the outboard brands, Honda’s quality and technology was by far and away the best. With the philosophy that customer satisfaction starts on the factory production line, and having been to the Honda factory in Japan to see the built-in quality at first hand, the opposition were therefore ‘non-starters’ in Port Alfred.

The Honda Marine Port Alfred Team also firmly believes in the future of the four-stroke as the way ahead for outboard motors. Also, the Team here simply loves a challenge and wanted to get in on the ground floor with Honda and help to build up the brand, because at the time Honda had only officially been back in South Africa for three years.

How long have you been a Honda Marine dealer?
For three years

Meet the Team at the Dealership

Laurence Kemsley – Marketing and Sales Manager

Technical:
The technical component of Honda Marine Port Alfred received a boost with
the recent appointment of LB van Oudtshoorn as Workshop and Boat Rigging Manager. He comes with extensive experience of ‘Organisation and Methods’ concepts in production facilities and installations, from having previously worked in Italy and Botswana. LB will direct Honda Marine Port Alfred’s workshop operations including the rigging of new boats, repairs and rebuilding of outboard motors and gearboxes, as well as building and repairs to hulls and boat trailers. He is a boating enthusiast and deep sea and river fisherman, and has his deep sea skipper’s ticket.

With what Boat Manufacturers do you have direct tie-ups?

Benguela 530 from Austral Marine --- PHOTO: Leisure Boating Magazine

We have a four-year relationship with Austral Marine for its Angler Boats such as the Panache, Odyssey, Benguela, Harrier and Kestrel models. Our association with Austral stems from the superb quality, performance and design integrity of its products. We sell the El Shaddai Flamingo cabin cruisers, Infanta RIB inflatables, ButtCats and SuperCat deep sea fishing boats, Kowie Marine river barges and any houseboats – plus any specific custom boats that clients ask us to source and rig for them.

What types of Boat Packages are most popular in your area?
We are fortunate in Port Alfred in that we have equal numbers of customers who wish to buy deep sea fishing boats for the rough but bounty-full fishing locations, as well as those who require speed boats and cabin boats for use on the magnificent, scenic Kowie, Bushman’s, Sunday’s and Kariega rivers, as well as the many large lagoons in the area. The Kowie River in Port Alfred is navigable for up to 22 kms on a high tide. We have rigged mostly Odysseys, ButtCats and SuperCats for local fishermen, while Angler’s Panache 1450, 1750 and 1950 are by far our most popular inland craft for skiing, wakeboarding and cruising. For the deep sea fishing boats such as the Benguela 530 CAT, twin Honda BF60HP’s are absolute perfection. A single BF60HP also matches the Panache 1450 like a dream, and the same goes for the BF135 on the Panache 1750, and a BF150 or BF200 for the Panache 1950.

Panache 1450 powered by a Honda BF60HP

The sale of pre-owned boats is also important to us in these tough economic times and whereas our upcountry customers (with holiday houses here) can easily afford to buy new, the locals largely are content to go for something second-hand, even with a bit of DIY required, just to get onto the water. These include small cabin boats with cathedral-type hulls for river fishing, Scimitars with thumping great, gas-guzzling, two-strokes for the skiing fraternity, and gnarly old ButtCats for the best serious deep sea fishing work.

In what main areas does your Workshop specialize?
We service all Honda outboards, rig new boats and fit equipment, launch and collect from anywhere, clean, repair and carry out general maintenance. What’s more we are also able to repair any type of outboard motors, four or two-stroke. We have large boat storage facilities in a handy location near the Marina, which has proved extremely popular among upcountry customers.

Importantly these days, we manage sea and river worthy inspections on clients’ boats, and provide all the necessary equipment, right down to affixing the registration decals. Customers find this a particularly tedious exercise when they are on leave and trying to have an annual holiday. We also provide boaters with convenient waterside refuelling facilities – crucial these days with so many craft having inboard fuel tanks – from where they can also buy lubricants and refreshments.

Furthermore, we have a large-capacity slipway dolly which can handle craft up to 40 tons. It is thus perfect for the quick, easy and safe removal of any boat out of the water, whether to repair it, clean it or to anti-foul it. This facility also brings us work from the Government, Rhodes University, Lightley’s Houseboats and big craft from Port Elizabeth, St Francis Bay and East London. It is also perfect for cleaning, servicing and anti-fouling the many barges on the river. In recent times the dolly has also ‘saved’ two boats because we were able to get them onto the dolly and out of the water before they sank!

Honda Marine Port Alfred's much used 'Dolly'

We also undertake repair work to trailers and jettys and are also the SA agents for the premium quality US-made, JetDock jetty and docking systems. Among their many advantages are that they have a (limited) lifetime warranty, require no maintenance and are modular for maximum flexibility when it comes to jetty and docking system configurations. They are also non-permanent structures, so if you want to move locations, you simply take your JetDock with you. JetDock drive-on models are becoming very popular, leaving your boat high and dry, out of the water when not in use, but beware of cheap JetDock imitations!

With which Leisure Accessory companies are you involved?
We sell a full range of watersport and boating leisure equipment including OBrien, Fuel and  Connelly skis, kneeboards, wakeboards, tubes, ski and tube ropes and Zero life vests. On the fishing front, we have a very busy and fully stocked fishing equipment and bait department. Drop-shot and fresh bait is available as are flies, lures, line, hooks, sinkers and all other fishing requirements. Shimano, Rapala, Daiwa, Berkley and Penn are among the major brand names stocked

With which Navigational Equipment companies are you involved?
Our boat shop is extensively stocked with most marine parts and equipment, from stainless steel split pins, nuts, bolts and other items, through to safety equipment, and boat parts sufficient to keep everyone on the water. We stock both Garmin and Lowrance electronics such as GPS/Fish finders, depth sounders and radar. We find the Icom VHF radios to be most popular as their quality – they are submersible for up to 30 minutes – and reliability is beyond question. For the serious deep sea fishermen we also sell satellite ‘phones, EPIRB systems and life rafts. HMPA is also a South African agent for the US’s West Marine with its unbelievably large range of imported marine and allied goods and equipment.
Do you offer sell Canoes/ Kayaks – if you do then what makes/ types are available?
Being on the river and on the sea, the Eastern Cape is a canoe and kayak paradise as well. We find the Fluid Designs brand most suited to our conditions and we sell the entire range from the one-person Buddy through to the two-person Synergy, with rod holders for fishing or without, for pure fun. We can arrange for the supply of any other brand of kayak or canoe, should the customer require it.

In the case of Customer Emergencies or Problems, do you offer a Call-Out service? How much do you charge?
HMPA offers a 24-hour emergency call out service for either deep sea or for the river.

We also work very closely with the NSRI station in Port Alfred in emergency and problem solving – its soon-to-be-launched new craft will be fitted with two Honda BF225s. The Harbour Master, Keryn van der Walt, also has the Outdoor Focus SuperDuck with new twin Honda BF90s. We work as a co-ordinated unit to assist boaters.

Do you have a specific message for the readers?

All-new Honda BF250 will be available from Honda Marine Port Alfred early in 2012

Our emphasis is on total, one-stop customer convenience, starting from the fact that we are located right in the middle of Port Alfred’s and the Eastern Cape’s boating hub and being open seven days a week. We hate ‘comebacks’ and unhappy customers and therefore sell only superior quality new products and don’t tolerate cheap and nasty items – they bring problems in the long term. Our message to readers is that we find so many people purchase the wrong boat for their purposes, so do proper research when buying a boat package. Carefully consider what the boat is to be mostly used for and go for the best in class for that use. We try to guide customers to think at least three years ahead in terms of their needs on the water. Speak to the experts on the subject, buy only quality and look after your craft and in 10 years you will be able to sell it at a profit.

HONDA MARINE DEALER FOCUS

With each Newsletter we’ll be introducing you to the Honda Marine Dealer Network, letting you know where your nearest Honda Marine dealer is situated and also giving you background into how Honda Marine has been able to so effectively establish itself in the South African market.

Working our way around the coast and then inland, we’re going to start off with Honda Marine Somerset West. Here we find ourselves in discussion with Jeremy Barnes, the Dealer Principal.

  1. Why did you choose Honda in terms of wanting to be a Marine dealer?
It is our view that the marine industry will ultimately become exclusively 4-Stroke, this is driven by the ever increasing fuel price in the commercial environment, and by the infinitely more pleasurable boating experience in the leisure market. With this in mind we were certain that we wanted to have a franchise partner who produced the best 4-Stroke engine available, so with Honda having been producing 4-Stroke marine outboard engines since 1964, and in fact having never having produced a 2-Stroke engine, the final decision was a no-brainer. We also chose Honda because of their fantastic ethos, “producing products of the highest quality yet at a reasonable price for worldwide customer satisfaction”, and as any existing Honda owner will know they certainly live up to it.
  2. How long have you been a Honda Marine dealer?
We have been a very proud Honda Marine dealer for 18 months now and look forward to a long association with the largest engine manufacturer in the world.
  3. Meet the Team at the dealership
    Jeremy Barnes – Dealer Principal – Cell: 082 900 6012
Brian Pinn – After Sales Manager
Louise Linde – Parts and Accessories Procurement Manager,
    Mandie Lilford – Customer Liaison
Andre Bloemhoff – Sales Executive (Boats & Accessories)
    Rosey Hendricks – Financial Manager
  4. With which Boat Manufacturers do you have direct tie-ups?
We are very proud Angler dealers representing their range of Panache, Odyssey, Benguela, and Kestrel hulls, we also have our range of Clifton XXX and AquaScape hulls designed in Cape Town for Cape waters. In the sports fishing market we represent the Global Power Cat Group with their comprehensive range ofGlacier Bay and World Cat catamarans.
  5. What types of Boat Packages are most popular in your area?
In Cape Town there is a strong leisure following, 17 to 22 foot bowriders, BUT almost without exception our consumer wants to be able to take this vessel to sea on a glorious day. This results in us offering a lot of boats that have self-draining decks with a more pronounced V and more freeboard than one would normally expect in a leisure boat. In the fishing arena there always seems to be a to and fro between Catamarans and Mono Hulls, Centre and Forward consoles, and we have learned that this is a specific market in which the consumer generally has his/her set of beliefs, so here we listen and comply!
  6. What are the main areas in which your Workshop specialises?
We are very proud of our workshop which offers full diagnostic routine maintenance right up to complete restorations and rebuilds. We also have a reverse-in test tank which allows us to do diagnostic testing under load right here on site. We also take our rigging of new boats very seriously and we spare no expense, as through poor rigging one can soon bring the best engine and the best hull together and end up with a final product that is not worthy.
  7. With which Leisure Accessory companies are you involved?
We represent the Airborne Towers range of wakeboard towers, T-Tops and accessories, together with a complete range of water skis, wakeboards, gloves, ropes, harnesses, and towables (tubes) from brands such as Connelly, OBRIEN, CWB, and Body Glove. We also stock Zero, Burn, and Reef life jackets and neoprene ski vests.
  8. With which Navigational Equipment companies are you involved?
We are an authorised Lowrance dealer, representing a full range of sonar, radar, and GPS products.
  9. Do you sell Canoes/ Kayaks – if you do then what makes/ types are available?
Yes we offer the Tarpon range of fishing skis and Orka paddles and blades.
  10. In the case of Customer Emergencies or Problems, do you offer a Call-Out service? How much do you charge?
We do have emergency numbers, and our first priority is to get the client on the water, we do not have a standard call out fee.
  11. Do you have a specific message for the readers?
Our ethos follows Honda’s quite closely in that we strive to conduct business with integrity which is fair and equitable for all concerned. We are of the opinion that transactions concluded that are only good for one party are not worth doing, and that when we sell a consumer a boat, we are in fact selling them a lifestyle and starting a relationship which we hope will span years, for us it’s not about a once off purchase.
