PS Honda Marine Bass Fishing Team persevere to win 7th spot at Bronkhorstspruit – by Chad Anassis
April’s Bass Equalizer Tournament Trail (BETT) was held at Bronkhorstspruit Dam on 14 April. With our Bass Boat powered by a reliable, powerful and fuel efficient Honda BF150, it allows us to concentrate on the task at hand, greatly increasing our chances of success. In what was a slow day, our perseverance shone through and we managed to record a 7th place as well as winning ‘Biggest Fish For the Day’.
Having pre-fished Makolodam back in February we were able to locate a big fish or two. Unfortunately on competition day the pattern that we thought would work deserted us. Being a deep water impoundment the fishing is slow and lethargic and after much scratching around we scrambled a 27th place on the day.
At Bronkhorstspruit the water level had dropped three feet in a month during pre-fish, but once again I unfortunately pinned a beauty of way over three kilos fishing a jig and trailer bait. With an air of anticipation and pulling away 27th on actual competition day, Barry, my Honda teammate and I, fished a drop off early in the morning expecting the fish to move up to feed, but with shock and horror the fish went on holiday! Eventually our first fish was deposited into the live-well at only 11h00.
However as a team fishing in our second season, we’ve learnt one thing and that is that panicking is not the answer for success. Persevering with pitching jigs and flukes, we eventually boated a 2kg fish around 13h00 and then a beauty of 2,470 kg at 14h30. With all the results in at 16h00, our Team Portable Shade Honda Marine ended up in 7th place out of a total of 60 and what’s more we won ‘Biggest Fish for the day’.
Once more a big thank you to Honda Marine and Portable Shade for their invaluable sponsorship. We look forward to the next round of the BETT.
