The smallest engines in the Honda Marine 4-stroke only lineup, the BF2 and BF5 portable outboards deliver easy starting and quiet operation paired with outstanding fuel efficiency, and as a result have established themselves as the engines of choice for anyone wanting to power a small Honwave inflatable, a canoe, a tender or any small boat.

BF2: A Mini Powerhouse
Small and easy to handle, Honda’s BF2 is the lightest four-stroke outboard motor available at just 12 kgs, this low-maintenance, lightweight model is the perfect portable outboard. A fold-down tiller handle allows for easy transportation and storage, while an integral fuel tank facilitates removal and portability as one unit. The motor’s fuel vent may also be closed for transport or extended storage periods.

Like the BF5, the design of the BF2 incorporates a number of innovative features, including Shallow Water Drive, 4-Front Corrosion Protection, Twist-Grip Throttle, and a front-mount carrying handle. A Centrifugal Clutch maintains a smooth idle, automatically engaging the propeller above idle speed when the throttle is advanced. Similar to the neutral position in an automobile, the feature provides outstanding trolling capabilities. Further contributing to the BF2’s ease of use is a 360-degree swivel bracket which provides superior manoeuvrability in tight areas and results in additional reverse thrust. And since it is air-cooled, the BF2 eliminates the need for a water pump and ensures that the cooling system will not become plugged with debris.

BF5: Impressive Portable Power
Weighing just 27kgs, Honda Marine’s BF5 is lightweight, compact, and outfitted with a front-mount carrying handle for easy transport. Its 127cc, (7.8 cubic inch) engine features a water-cooled, single cylinder design for excellent low- to mid-range power, while a Digital CD Ignition delivers high-energy output for quick and easy starts. The motor’s Twist-Grip Throttle allows for precise throttle control, and a unique throttle tensioner further minimizes driver fatigue.

The BF5 incorporates full Forward-Neutral-Reverse (F-N-R) Shifting with in-gear start protection, as well as Honda’s patented 4-Front Corrosion Protection System. This double-sealed, multi-layered paint process serves to extend the life of all Honda outboard models.

A number of other features complete the BF5’s design. A Low Oil Warning System and rev limiter protect the engine from severe damage if the oil reaches a low level, while an innovative Shallow-Water Drive feature allows the engine to be tilted in low water. A full-swivel bracket design enhances the engine’s overall durability by reducing vibration to the tiller handle, and a fold-down tiller handle facilitates easy storage below deck.

Swartvlei, which has been rated as the seventh most important estuarine system in South Africa, consists of a large (9 km²) and fairly deep lake, which is linked to the sea by a 7 km long estuary. The estuary is open to the sea approximately 50 percent of the time, and is often closed during the winter months. The estuary has large sandflats which provide an important habitat for burrowing, invertebrate bait species, which in turn are a food source for fishes and birds frequenting the estuary.

Field surveys done by SANParks in 2008 noted that the intertidal sand-flats were mostly bare of Cape eelgrass and supported large populations of the common sandprawn, but relatively few burrowing shellfish. However, since 2009 there has been a progressive increase in size of intertidal eelgrass beds, and in the abundance of burrowing shellfish, such as beaked clam, lesser heart-clam and littoral tellin, a concomitant decrease in the size of the sandprawn beds.

This was especially prominent on the sandflats of the lower and middle reaches of the estuary, and by late 2012 the extent of the sandprawn beds had decreased by approximately a quarter of its original size. Researchers from the University of Cape Town noted that the densities of the common sandprawn colonising the sandflats of Langebaan Lagoon were negatively correlated to the cover of Cape eelgrass, and at sites where eelgrass was absent sandprawns extended farther up the shore and reached a larger maximum size than in its presence.

The common sandprawn is itself an important structuring agent of faunal assemblages of sandflats. Through its burrowing and feeding activities, the sandprawn continually turn over the substratum and reduce its micro-algae contents. Experiments have shown that this process exerts a strongly negative influence on the feeding of the beaked clam and the surface grazing tick shell (a tiny whelk), and appears to substantially reduce the densities of these species on the sandflats.

Therefore, the current abundance of clams in the Swartvlei estuary is apparently closely linked to the extent of eelgrass cover. The distribution of eelgrass in temporary open and closed estuaries, like Swartvlei, is influenced mainly by the substratum and the height and turbidity of the water. A stable substratum and clear water generally promotes the growth of Cape eelgrass. Thus, the current situation in Swartvlei is likely to persist until the next large flood smoothers the eelgrass beds with fine silt. SANParks will continue to monitor the situation…

NSRI’s Spirit of Dawn safely brings ashore three passengers on a charter diving boat suffering from severe motion sickness

Just after 08h30 on Saturday the 14th of March NSRI Shelly Beach’s duty crew launched SPIRIT OF DAWN following a request for assistance from the charter diving boat C-FREAKS reporting three passengers to be suffering severe motion sickness at Protea Banks.

On arrival on the scene, at Pinnacle Point, Protea Banks, 4.5 nautical miles from their sea rescue station, three women, one from Kimberley, one from Brits and a local from San Lameer were transferred onto the sea rescue craft, along with the husband of the lady from Brits, and were brought safely ashore. They were assisted with rehydration and some medical treatment for their acute motion sickness and then released requiring no further assistance.

Honda Aircraft Company recently announced that the first HondaJet flight simulator has been delivered and is currently being installed at the company’s world headquarters in Greensboro, North Carolina

The full motion, Level D simulator was developed in partnership with FlightSafety International and will be located at the HondaJet Training Centre on the campus of Honda Aircraft.

To enhance its state-of-the-art safety features, Honda partnered with FlightSafety International to develop the simulator and training program. The HondaJet flight simulator is a top-of-the-line training device that uses sophisticated software to precisely replicate the flight characteristics of the aircraft. The simulator will be capable of providing a full range of scenarios to help prepare and qualify pilots to safely operate the aircraft.

The simulator was constructed and assembled at FlightSafety’s manufacturing facility in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, with the collaboration of Honda Aircraft. It will be certified to meet both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) regulations.
